The Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) is a key initiative designed to provide affordable healthcare coverage for Kenyans through resource pooling. Established under the Social Health Insurance Act, registration is compulsory for all employers, both private and public, by 30th September 2024. This includes businesses, NGOs, government agencies, and self-employed individuals.
How to Register for SHIF
Employers can begin the registration process either online via the SHIF portal or by visiting a local SHIF office. The following documents are required for registration:
- Certificate of Incorporation (for companies) or Business Registration (for sole proprietors/partnerships)
- KRA Personal Identification Number (PIN) Certificate
- Employer details: company name, nature of business, number of employees, and contact information (postal address, physical address, email, and phone number).
- Employee list with names, national ID numbers, and Social Health Insurance Fund numbers (if already registered).
SHIF Contributions
Once registered, employers must remit monthly contributions for their employees. The contribution rate is 2.75% of gross monthly salary, with a minimum of Ksh 300 per month. After registration is completed, employers will receive a confirmation email containing a unique employer number for all future SHIF transactions.
Benefits of SHIF
SHIF ensures that all Kenyans have access to healthcare services by distributing financial risks across a broader pool. Employers who comply with these regulations contribute to a healthier workforce, enhancing overall productivity. The SHIF system simplifies employer interactions with healthcare funding through a user-friendly online portal, making it easy to manage employee records, contributions, and updates.
By taking this proactive step towards registration, businesses and employees alike are ensuring seamless access to essential healthcare services, safeguarding the well-being of Kenya’s workforce.
